![]() R&D Portfolio The Glass Manufacturing Industry Council manages a portfolio of pre-competitive research projects on behalf of the Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technology (OIT). Under recent federal financial constrains, the program has substantially diminished in recent years. Many of the completed project, however, are available for implementation by interested companies. Click here to see a description of recent research projects that provide opportunities for technology improvements and energy reduction in a number of different areas.
The "Glass Industry Roadmap", which the GMIC
maintains, has been updated and
revised to its final version. The roadmap
serves as the basis for the research portfolio,
through a group of "Technical Subcommittees", each
one focusing on a different aspect of the
industry. Click on the following link to view the
April 2002
document.
The technical subcommittees work
from the priorities established in the "Roadmap"
for the glass industry by our Vision document: "Glass:
a Clear Vision for a Bright Future" (Order
this document through our "Publications"
Page). They are compared to existing technologies
and used to develop priorities for advances in
those areas. Priorities are then converted to a
Glass Industry Solicitation, which is issued by
the DOE to all interested parties, requesting
Proposals for research projects to bring those
advances to reality.
The last full solicitation was the 2002 program. Programs that resulted from this were implemented in 2003 and, for the most part, completed in 2005. These included the following:

Aside from formal solicitations, however, GMIC and its members are very interested in having the opportunity to consider valid ideas for advancements in glass industry technology which will help our industry to become more cost effective, efficient, profitable and environmentally responsible. GMIC manages an ongoing program to: 1. Identify technology challenges preventing or retarding progress. 2. Prioritize the development of solutions to those challenges. 3. Propose research initiatives that will develop those solutions to interested Federal and State agencies for possible co-funding by those organizations. 4. And, with the DOE and other agencies, to manage a portfolio of research projects on behalf of the glass industry to achieve those objectives. We welcome the opportunity to be able to consider your ideas for future research projects. So that your concepts might be considered in the analysis and prioritizing process, please complete and send to GMIC by e-mail the form from this link (Project Proposal Form) for presentation to the appropriate sub-committee. This will ensure that your ideas can be considered along with all others "on the table". If you'd like to propose a research initiative that will benefit the U.S. Glass Industry, contact: Executive Director Michael Greenman.
